About this deal

I do not have positive relationships with any of my family, and have had a background of abuse in many forms, and (probably because of this) turned to alcohol and drugs. Drew Barrymore captured the hearts of the world, as the adorable wide eyed seven year old Gertie, in ET, in 1982. All in all I feel that this autobiographical account of what can happen to a young person when thrust into the spotlight is a great read. this has given me a little bit of hope that even though I'm not there yet, and it will take me a long, long time to be 'there', people can come through things like this. And so I ignored all of her drinking and drugs at age ten and her emancipation from her mother at 14, and focused on her other stuff – there was plenty of it.

I haven’t read these nor am I much of a film fan, but I do know the feeling – several years ago I read Bob Geldof’s autobiography ‘Is That It? I am 23 now, am an alcoholic and recovering drug addict, and have been in and out of psychiatric hospitals (which I think really helped me relate to Drew's experiences of being in hospital). At the time of publication of this book, her relationship with her mother had been progressing, although since this book came out, it is a known fact that her relationship with her mum has been strained. I wasn't sure if I would like this book since it was written so long ago and by someone so young, but it stands the test of time. T. the Extra-Terrestrial and quickly became one of Hollywood's most recognized child actresses, going on to establish herself in mainly comic roles.

For some reason Jaid Barrymore thought it a good idea to let a 9-year-old, albeit a precocious one, accompany her to clubs and gave her more social freedom than most parents (including mine) allow for teenagers. She gave such good press when she released the book – the stories she told in interviews were funny and sad and everything in between, which makes me quite sure she should stick to being Drew, not writing about Drew! Though this is poorly written, it's a fairly interesting read considering the co-author was 14 years-old at the time.

After reading this book, it's amazing how Drew Barrymore grew up at all, let alone grew up to be relatively sane. I wish she'd go back and do an update, of course, if I were Drew, I would want to edit out the pictures of me with the Coreys. I am looking forward to reading her book wildflower and seeing how her life has improved since her teenage years. It's a heart breaking story of a real-life Hollywood child star whose life spirals out of control before barely making it through puberty. Years before becoming a women, you will read about probably the strongest adolescent you will ever follow. I only recently stumbled upon the knowledge that Drew Barrymore wrote an autobiography over 20 years ago detailing the issues she encountered with drugs and alcohol at a young age.

Did you know that when Elliott is trying to make Gertie believe “only kids can see” ET and she rolls her eyes and says “Gimmee a break,” that was all Drew? Her mom wanted to be an actress, but since that didn't really work out, she sort of but not really pushed her daughter into it.So it's no wonder a kid with a family history of depression, alcohol and drug abuse would turn to self-medicating at such a young age. Drew, as she says, will live the rest of her life on the brink of disaster, from minute to minute and hour to hour.
